What is Open Source?

Submitted by Joshua Hesketh on Thu, 25/10/2007 - 15:43.

Quote: WikipediaOpen source is a set of principles and practices that promote access to the design and production of goods and knowledge. The term is most commonly applied to the source code of software that is available to the general public with relaxed or non-existent intellectual property restrictions. This allows users to create software content through incremental individual effort or through collaboration.

This is the first post in a series on open source and it's importance. As the following posts are added to my blog I will link to them from this one.

The quote from Wikipedia is a great introduction to Open Source. Most of the time the term open source is applied only to computer code that is freely available, but it is also a model of operation. By not withholding information or important materials we are able to collaborate on work to ensure a larger, more stable and more amazing product.
